Time travel, bunny suits and visions. Oh my.
Donnie Darko was nowhere close to what I expected it to be. What I was expecting was a lame sci-fi movie with a dim-witted premise.... it was anything but.
The movie is set in 1988, and has a very dreamy/surreal mood. It begins in the Darko residence where we are introduced to Donnie (who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and has recently stopped taking his medication) and the rest of his family. That night, in a state of half-sleep, Donnie is summoned outside and away from his room by a man in a bunny suit named Frank. He is informed that "in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds, the world will end". Soon after, a jet engine mysteriously crashes through his ceiling and destroys his bedroom while Donnie sleeps soundly on the lawn outside.
What a coincidence.
Donnie spends the next 28 days dealing with hallucinations and visions, as well as horrible events happening to everyone around him. I will not go into detail- For those who have yet to see this film, it wouldn't make any sense to you if I tried. In all honesty, this film still isn't all that clear to me and I've seen it three times.
Donnie Darko is rich with theories on other dimensions, alternate universes, and biblical references, as well as plenty of irony; It challenges the norms of reality. Although Donnie Darko is pretty absurd, it is one of my favorite movies. Weird as hell, yes, but also fascinating and inspiring... in a twisted sort of way.
